Senior High Social/Study Skills Grades 9-12
This course offers a small group setting for special eduction students to receive instruction in developing effective and appropriate study strategies and social skills so they can successfully participate in general ed classes.
Attention is given to the individual student's needs expressed in their IEP ( Individual Education Plan). Students will practice and implement study strategies and skills that will enable them to have the opportunity to be successful academically. Students will be given the opportunity to learn, improve and maintain the social skills that are necessary for them to interact appropriately with their peers and adults. Students will receive instruction in the five areas of transition: Daily Living, Community Participation, Post Secondary, Employment, and Recreation and Leisure; to better prepare them for life after high school. Students will receive a copy of "Schoolview" weekly so they can assess and monitor their academic progress. They will be responsible for planning and organizing their homework completion.
Grading Policy
Students are graded on participation, verbal and written, as well as appropriate social interactions with peers and adults during the class period. Grades are determined by a percentage of appropriate behaviors and daily work completed. All grades are pass / fail.
Classroom Expectations:
Respect others and their property.
Follow staff instructions.
Stay on-task.
Students will bring books, assignments, and any other material needed from their mainstreamed classes to their resource hour.
Classroom Discipline:
Precision Request Model in the classroom. When given a behavioral/academic directive, the student will be given 5-7 seconds to follow the directive. When/if he/she does not follow a directive he/she will be given the directive once more. When/if the student does not comply within 5-7 seconds he/she will participate in social skills instruction and/or follow-up with BLC staff with regard to appropriate behavior.
